Welcome to the LDSD Group!
PhD and Postdoctoral Positions Available
For details regarding these postitions, please visit our vacancies section
The LDSD Group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy was founded in 1991 and currently has 23 PhD students and 9 postdoctoral workers involved in 5 main research topics covering both experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics. The five main topics are coherent control on the nanoscale, spin control in individual quantum systems, advanced photonic structures, Bose-Einstein condensation in microcavities, and mid-infrared physics especially quantum cascade lasers. Full details of the research are given under the specific research headings on our research pages.
The research carried out by the group is funded principally by EPSRC, but also through a variety of European Grants, the Wolfson Foundation, industrial support and the Science Research Investment Fund. This funding has permitted us to establish a variety of well equipped labs covering the spectral ranges from the mid-IR to the ultraviolet, a variety of timescales from continuous wave to ultrafast, spatially resolved capabilities (down to sub-micron) and temperatures from room temperature down to liquid helium temperature. Again full details can be found under the research headings on our research pages and in the introductory research page. Substantial investment continues to be made into infrastructure, including in the last two years a streak camera with 10psec time resolution, low temperature piezo-stages with nanometre scale stability over many hours/days coupled with high magnetic fields up to 10Tesla, high stability lasers and advanced charge coupled device detectors.
The group is highly active in publishing its research in journals of high impact (see list of selected publications over last year on the EPSRC Programme Grant page , and over longer period on the Publications page ).
On the PhD student side, every member of the LDSD group has access to a dedicated student library of books and also to a wide variety of online journals providing background information on the research topics.
An important part in our activities is played by weekly group meetings and approximately every 2-4 weeks by seminars by respected external speakers. Links to these programmes are given at the top left of this page.
